Capacity building, Toolkit and Citizen Science Programs

We support capacity building both online and face to face. We provide educational tools to share our expertise and experience, and we combine our work with citizen science

Summary

Capacity building workshop

Capacity building and exchange of knowledge has been conducted through specifically designed workshops that incorporate the participants’ needs and capabilities. The workshop could be fully practical in the field, on desktop, or in presentation mode. It included sharing local knowledge on the coastal habitats and knowledge on coastal ecology and management, field monitoring and remote sensing mapping methods. Workshops were conducted online or onsite nationally and internationally (e.g. Indonesia, Fiji, Cook Island, Tonga, Maldives, Bahamas)

Remote Sensing Toolkit

The aim of the remote sensing toolkit is to show managers, scientists and technicians working in marine, terrestrial and atmospheric environments how images collected from satellites and aircraft (remote sensing) can be used to map and monitor environmental features or processes and their change over time. The toolkit was initiated in 2004 and has since haphazardly been updated if resources permitted. The last update was in 2016 and included a translation to the Indonesian language.

Citizen Science

Citizen science is an important part of coral and seagrass conservation and provides additional data for areas otherwise not visited by scientists. Citizen science also creates awareness of marine habitats within the wider community. Data collected through these programs can provide additional information for the training and validation of coral reef and seagrass mapping and monitoring efforts using earth observations. We have been actively collaborating with programs such as Reef Check Australia, Great Reef Census, and Reef Health Impact Survey Data (i.e., Eye on the reef program).
